500 Days Of Summer

Last week, I saw one of the best movies I have ever seen. 500 Days of Summer is a story of boy meets girl. Boy in this case is Joseph Gordon Levitt playing Tom and Girl is Zooey Deschanel playing Summer. You should know up front, this is not a love story. Nonetheless, I laughed louder than I ordinarily would in a theater, I smiled uncontrollably a few times, and whenever something was depressing, I felt that literal sinking feeling in my chest as if I was being dumped. I recommend 500 Days Of Summer to anybody who loves movies, has ever been attracted to another person, or needs to feel a story intensely. The Soundtrack of the movie also is very amazing with songs of eg. The Smiths and The Temper Trap.

Here’s the trailer:

One Tree Hill

As promised I’m going to talk about my favourite show: One Tree Hill. One Tree Hill is an American young adult television drama created by Mark Schwahn. The Show premiered in the US in 2003 but wasn’t broadcasted in Belgium until 2006. At that time I was about 16 going on 17 and struggling with some huge issues. Because of the show’s main themes such as friendship, love, family, drama (of course) and especially because of the good music, I was immediately hooked on the show. I have seen every episode of every season (7 in total) and I watch the new episodes weekly.

These are the show’s 5 main characters:

James Lafferty plays Nathan Scott

Chad Michael Murray plays Lucas Scott

Hilarie Burton plays Peyton Sawyer

Bethany Joy Galeotti plays Haley James

Sophia Bush plays Brooke Davis

There are a lot of other characters but I’m not going to tell you everything, because that would ruin it for you if you would like to begin to watch the show. And after 7 seasons, things got really complicated. And when I say really, I mean REALLY complicated.

The first four seasons of the show focus on the characters' high school years. With the beginning of the fifth season, the timeline goes four years ahead, showing their lives after college. In the seventh season, the timeline was adjusted one year into the future after the sixth season.

Like I said: music plays a significant part in the plot and the movement of the scenes throughout an episode. Schwahn has revealed that each episode title is named after a particular song that has something in common with the theme of the episode. For example, episode 1.02 "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most" is named after a Dashboard Confessional song of the same name. In this episode, Lucas realizes that basketball, which had once been his safe place, is now the place that he has come to fear the most after joining the Ravens. & Did you know that One Tree Hill made history by having Led Zeppelin's song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" in its Season 3 finale? Led Zeppelin has never licensed their songs on network TV (the only other time was on HBO's cable series The Sopranos). One Tree Hill is the first non-cable network television series to ever have a licensed Led Zeppelin song on their show.

So hooray for One Tree Hill!

1st of Augustana

Do you want to see it? The place where I was free?

‘Cause in my mind I’ve been there, but there’s no one here but me.

This is a verse of the song Twenty Years by Augustana. It’s such a beautiful song, the last few days I just can’t stop listening to it. The funny thing is, on the first of August of this year, I turned twenty. Haha! (The band is called Augustana, the song is called Twenty Years.. Get it?)

Anyway, Augustana really is one of my favourite bands. Their 2 albums All The Stars And Boulevards and Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt really are brutally honest and pure, beautiful and vulnerable. I have known the band for a while now. I discovered this band by watching my favourite TV show: One Tree Hill. Augustana’s first singles Boston (a very beautiful song as well!) and 'Stars and Boulevards' appeared in the show. The show’s soundtrack is really amazing. I have discovered a lot of bands that way. But I’ll tell you more about One Tree Hill some other time. :-)

I'm (k)impressed

The last couple of weeks I didn't really find the time to post a blog, even though there were a lot of things I could talk about. So I'll make it up to you now :) here it goes:

First of all, I have really great news!!
On the 1st of November, my godchild Femke was born!

She’s the daughter of my brother and his wife.
She was 49,5 cm tall and she weighed 2,975 kg.
The first time I saw her she just took my breath away
And I cried for, like, 30 minutes.
I was really (k)impressed, this is just so wonderful.

Isn’t she adorable??

Second of all, on the 20th of October I went to see the All-American Rejects in the AB in Brussels. I've been a fan of this band for, let's say, 7 years now, since the moment I heard their single 'Swing Swing'. From then on I bought all their albums. The first time I saw them perform live was at Groezrock 3 years ago, so this was the second time I was going to see them live. I enjoyed every minute of it, they played all my favorite songs. And singer Tyson Ritter really (k)impressed me, he isn't really my type, but he does have a lot of sex appeal and he sure knows how to make young girls go crazy. The only thing I didn't like were the outro's of some songs. they just kept going... and going... and going... Enough is enough, guys, don't push your luck :) But overall it was great.

And lastly, on Halloween I went to see Bat For Lashes, also in the AB in Brussels. I'm not really a fan of this band; I only knew two of their songs, 'What's a girl to do' and 'Daniel'. At first it was kind of special. On stage, there hung this large banner with a howling wolf under the full moon and when Natasha Khan asked the audience to start howling, it really gave me goose bumps. I usually only go to rock concerts or festivals, but this really was something different. After they played the songs I knew, the band disappeared and Natasha took place behind her piano. All lights went off and there was only one spot left on. Immediately I knew that this was going to be a very beautiful song and indeed, Siren Song was the highlight of the evening. After that, it kind of got boring, but still, I was (k)impressed.

Revenge

“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly”

Now this is something to think about. Some of you may think “who cares, it’s just nature having its way” but I think people have similar metamorphoses.

I’m sure that every single one of us has been faced with a bully once. If you weren’t the one who was being bullied, you were the one who was bullying. The bullies always think they’re better, smarter, cooler, better looking… When in fact, the ones who are being bullied are the ones who are good, smart, cool, good looking, just in a different way. And because they are being bullied for some ridiculous reasons (like not being a part of the rich family, wearing glasses, having curly hair, not having a size zero…) they think something is wrong with them and nobody wants to be their friend because people keep saying they are “strange”..

Some of you may have already guessed, but when I was little, I have been bullied as well for ridiculous reasons. At least, now I realize that. But because I was the one who was being bullied, I always thought that people didn’t like me, because of my hair, because of my family, because of my good (!) grades, because of how I look…

But I have grown up and I got wiser. Now I realize I am worth knowing. I know I don’t have a size zero but that’s okay because ZERO ISN’T A SIZE. I graduated high school easily and now I enjoy college. I couldn’t be more proud of my family. My life is going great and I’m quite happy with who I am and what I have right now.

And not so long ago, I saw one of those bullies again. We hadn’t seen each other in a few years, and somehow, the roles had turned. Now she was the one who was looking a bit strange. Now she was the one who didn’t have a size zero but more like a size thousand. She dropped out of high school and is still unemployed..

When she was a flower, I was the caterpillar.

Now she’s withered and I have turned into a butterfly!

Revenge can be so sweet.

Kimprovisation

“Improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment and inner feelings.”

This sentence describes somehow what my blog will be about. I have thought about some specific themes such as my favorite music or my life as a PHL Music student, but I like to do whatever I want, whenever I want and wherever I want, so why should I bother to choose one specific subject when there are so many things to blog about? Every day brings something else. One day I’m all into post-hardcore, the next I’m into Motown soul.  One day I feel like the luckiest girl on earth because I got in at the PHL Music Academy, the next I want to drop out of school. I’m just saying…

Life is all about improvisation.

In my life, the main character is Kim.

Kim + improvisation = Kimprovisation
